Tippler sang so badly that cops freed him
A tippler, picked up by a patrolling party here early on Thursday morning on charges of making public nuisances, secured his freedom in a bizarre manner- by singing a hit Bollywood number non-stop for six hours, of course in harshest possible voice, in the police lockup. The youth, aged around 26, has even not given the opportunity to the policemen to record his name by refusing to be interrupted in his almost record breaking singing exercise. Policemen, one after another, tried in vain to stop him from singing inside the police station and later threw him into the lockup praying desperately for his soberness to return by morning. “He has driven us so mad that we finally decided to set him free to escape from the torture caused by his non-stop singing in harsh voice. But, he refused to be released and insisted on continuing his recitation in custody, leading us to forcibly evict him from the police station. We had to then lock ourselves inside the police station to escape from him”, P. Kanwar, in-charge of Civil Line police station here told this newspaper. According to him, a police party patrolling the area rounded up the youth while he was breaking roadside barricades in an inebriated condition at around 3 am. He was then handed over to the local Civil Line police station. Soon, the ordeal of half-a-dozen constables on duty then in the police station began. The youth started singing the sixties hit song- Awaara Hun.... (of Raj Kapoor starrer Awaara movie) and continued to recite the same song for six hours despite countless warning by policemen to stop. “When we set him free he got angry and started breaking flower pots kept in the premises of the police station.” Mr Kanwar said. “Even then he did not stop singing the same song. Later, we took him to the nearby government hospital for medical check up to ascertain if he was insane. But, he somehow dodged the escorting party and disappeared in the hospital,” Mr Kanwar added heaving a sigh of relief.
