A youth was arrested for allegedly trying to rape a 16-year-old Class 10 student after she resisted molestation. The incident took place in Ashok Vihar area of northwest Delhi on Wednesday evening. A senior police official said that the accused, identified as Shokeen, was arrested. The official said the victim studies in a nearby government school. On Wednesday night, she was returning home from tuition when the accused stopped her near her home. “The accused molested the victim and when she resisted he tried to rape her. She somehow escaped from his clutches and reached her home. The victim then narrated the incident to her family members who decided to approach the police,” said the official. The victim was admitted to a nearby hospital. A police source said that the accused had been stalking the victim for a long time but it was the first time when her family members decide to lodge an FIR against him.

Cricketer Virender Sehwag’s sister Anju Lata Meherwal has demanded a ticket for the Assembly elections. Sources said the party had earlier decided to give ticket to Ms Meherwal, a Congress councillor from Dakshinpuri, from Sangam Vihar constituency and field her against BJP MLA S.C.L. Gupta as he won last polls by mere 3,589 votes. Later the party decided to field her from Najafgarh. “Ms Meherwal hails from Najafgarh and she is from Jat community. Being the sister of Virender Sehwag, who is called Najafgarh’s Nawab, will help her garner votes. Currently, Bharat Singh is the MLA from the seat. He is the only INLD MLA. He has serious criminal charges against him and his brother Kishan Pehalwan was once booked under MCOCA,” said a Congress office-bearer. Bharat Singh has twice defeated Congress’s Kanwal Singh Yadav from Najafgarh constituency. However, the party is yet to disclose its list of candidates. Meanwhile, MLA aspirants thronged the party office to fill forms on Wednesday. The applicants have to submit the forms before September 30.
