Beni, Lanka issues rock Parliament
Parliament was disrupted again on Wednesday after uproar by the Samajwadi Party members seeking resignation of steel minister Beni Prasad Verma, while DMK and AIADMK members raised the Sri Lankan issue. The DMK and AIADMK want India to take a hard line vis-a-vis Sri Lanka at the UNHRC meet in Geneva. Both Houses were first adjourned till noon amid ruckus with members from Samajwadi Party (SP), DMK and AIADMK targeting the government. In the Lok Sabha, DMK, AIADMK and CPI members stormed the Well shouting slogans against atrocities on Tamils in Sri Lanka. They demanded a resolution to be adopted by Parliament on Sri Lankan Tamils issue. Members of Samajwadi Party, which supports the government from outside, also joined in the Well shouting slogans against Mr Verma for his reported remarks against their party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and demanding the minister’s resignation. When the LS reassembled at noon, SP members were again on their foot demanding Mr Verma’s ouster from the government. The SP was backed by Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, who said the minister should resign immediately. The Chair then adjourned the House till 12.30 pm, and then for the day. The RS also witnessed vociferous protests by members of the three parties who trooped into the Well of the House. The DMK and AIADMK members rushed into the Well shouting slogans demanding justice for Tamils in Sri Lanka. AIADMK members carried posters of slain LTTE chief Prabhakaran’s son and shouted “We want Justice.” SP members too trooped into the Well raising slogans demanding dismissal of Verma for his utterances against their party chief.
