India to move amendments

Forced into a corner over the upcoming vote on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, India is set to move amendments at the eleventh hour to the US-sponsored resolution on Thursday. How “tough” these amendments are remains to be seen for some in government favour a stringent stand and others advocate a softer approach so that Indo-Lankan bilateral ties are not affected and New Delhi is able to “live with the resolution”. There were indications that despite the “strong” amendments that India will move, it will avoid seeking “outside intervention” in Lanka. So while it may seek an independent and credible probe into alleged violations of human rights in Lanka, the word “international” will not be used. The US resolution had talked about the “establishment of an independent truth-seeking mechanism... and notes the call of the High Commissioner for an independent and credible intenrational investigation into alleged violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law”. This bit is not part of the final draft.
