An Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party delegation on Friday met President Pranab Mukherjee and requested him to send the controversial ordinance to negate the Supreme Court verdict on convicted legislators back to the government for reconsideration. The delegation alleged that the ordinance on convicted MPs and MLAs has created discontent among people. “We have informed the President the Supreme Court has struck down a section of the Representation of People’s Act terming it unconstitutional, then how the government can bring the same section through an ordinance,” he said. “If the section is unconstitutional then the ordinance itself has become unconstitutional. And there is discontentment among the people over government’s attempt to save tainted MPs and MLAs and the President should not give his assent,” he said. The AAP said ordinances were supposed to be emergency measures only. “There is no emergency to bring this law. This bill was introduced in RS in the last session and referred to the standing committee,” he said.
