Peter Smith, the father of Australia's Steven Smith, who scored the first century in the ongoing Ashes series has lauded the efforts of his son.

The 30-year-old middle-order batsman and former captain scored 144 runs on the first day at Edgebaston, Birmingham on Thursday.

Speaking exclusively over telephone from Australia, he said, "It was a good effort to hold the team together and work with Head, Siddle and Lyon to achieve what will hopefully be a competitive score".

"It would have been nice had I been there but work still dictates when I can attend matches. I have always wanted to attend a match in India and hope to get that opportunity one day", he further added.

Incidentally, Steve's parents are scheduled to witness the second Test match beginning at Lord's.

"His wife Dani is always there offering the best support. My wife and I will be at Lords", he concluded.
