Mumbai: In a rain affected-match, West Indies Opener Chris Gayle registered a new feat in his glorious career by surpassing former West Indies legend Brian Lara who had played 295 ODI games for the Caribbeans.

After the rains interrupted the match, only 13 overs were bowled, but afterwards the match had to be abandoned as the rains again stopped the play, making the outfield wet and unplayable.

In spite of the rains, Chris Gayle was able to break one out of two records after he became the most capped player with 296 ODI appearances. Previously Brian Lara held the record with 295 ODI caps for the West Indies.

Gayle now tops the list with 296 caps, followed by Lara (295) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul at third with 268 ODI caps.

Most ODI caps for West Indies:

  1. Chris Gayle (296)
  2. Brian Lara (295)
  3. Shivnarine Chanderpaul (268)
  4. Desmond Haynes (238)
  5. Vivian Richards (187)

On Thursday, the rains forced the first ODI match between India and West Indies to be abandoned after playing just 13 overs. The home side scored 54 after losing Chris Gayle who scored 4 from 31 balls.

After the first interruption, the match got reduced to 43 overs, but the second interruption forced the umpire cancel the match. When the match was called off, West Indies players Evin Lewis and Shai Hope remained unbeaten on 40 and 6 respectively.

Earlier, India had won the toss and elected to field first. Even before the match got started, the rains forced the toss to be delayed by two hours. The toss was initially expected to happen at 7pm IST. However, after the second interruption the match had to be called off as the outfield became wet and unplayable.

Lastly, Gayle missed the opportunity to be the top scorer at the Guyana based stadium after getting out for 4. But, had he scored 67 or above then the 39-year-old would have been the top scorer at that stadium.
