ICC CWC'19: Was MS Dhoni not out? Fans question New Zealand's field placement

Mumbai: MS Dhoni's dismissal against New Zealand in the semi-final of ICC World Cup 2019 was considered as the turning point of the match.

India needed 25 runs off 10 deliveries when Dhoni got run out. However, fans are blaming an umpiring error for the former skipper's dismissal and are questioning New Zealand's field placement. The issue sparked a debate on Twitter regarding the legality of the delivery.

In the pictures and video going viral, a small graphic could be seen where six New Zealand players were standing outside the circle. According to ICC rules, only five fielders can be outside of the 30-yard circle in the 3rd powerplay. Thus, if the pictures stand true, the delivery should have been called a no-ball.

Dhoni gloved the ball towards short fine-leg, accelerated for the second run but fell short of the crease due to Martin Guptill's rocket throw.

It could have been a different story if umpires had called the no-ball. India's World Cup dreams ended after Dhoni's dismissal as the team was bowled out at 221 in 49.3 overs.
