Mumbai: The BCCI on their official Twitter handle had posted India’s victory post over Afghanistan with the caption ‘#TeamIndia thump Afghanistan by 11 runs’. However, the match was not only India’s toughest game in the  series so far but perhaps also one of the tournament’s closest games.

As a result the tweet became the butt of jokes and was later deleted.

After beating Australia and South Africa, India faced their biggest rivals Pakistan, and they too were beaten comfortably, making India one of only two teams to remain unbeaten in the tournament so far. The other being top of the table New Zealand.

When India’s next match after the Pakistan game was set with last place Afghanistan, who hadn’t won a single game so far in the tournament, Neither fans nor the experts predicted what went down at Southampton on June 22. Afghanistan restricted India to a score of just 224, after taking out key wickets in quick succession.

The team also almost made up that number despite India’s excellent bowling line-up. It took India some out of the box bowling-order decisions and phenomenal performances by key pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami to dispatch the Afghan batsmen, just 11 runs short of their target.

Third place India managed to win very narrowly, going on to maintain their unbeaten tag. They next face West Indies on June 27.
