The goal came somewhat against the run of play as South Korea had been pressuring the Mexican end looking for an equaliser.

Rostov-On-Don: Mexico moved to the brink of the World Cup knockout rounds with a 2-1 win over South Korea in Rostov-on-Don on Saturday.

An early penalty from Carlos Vela put Mexico ahead, and Javier Hernandez's second-half goal secured the Central Americans' second straight victory after stunning reigning champions Germany in their opening game, despite a late consolation from Son Heung-min. If Germany fail to beat Sweden later on Saturday, Mexico would go through and South Korea  eliminated.

Carlos Vela’s penalty kick put Mexico up in the 26h minute.

Mexico then made it 2-0 in the 66th minute after Hirving Lozano sprinted forward and found Javier Hernandez, who skipped past defenders and hit the ball low past goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo.

It’s the 50th career international goal for Hernandez, known as “Chicharito.”

The goal came somewhat against the run of play as South Korea had been pressuring the Mexican end looking for an equaliser.

Son Heungmin then reduced the margin with a superb left-footed strike in added time but it was all South Korea could manage.
