Gupta’s Sports Academy boys seal athletic championship

The Kandivali based academy athletes led by Rahul Kadam and Omkar Dalvi won 4x100m relay race in men’s category.

Gupta’s Sports Academy (GSA) won the overall championship of the 43rd Bombay YMCA State-Level Annual Athletic Meet 2019 that concluded at University Pavilion, Marine Lines.

The Kandivali based academy athletes led by Rahul Kadam and Omkar Dalvi won 4x100m relay race in men’s category. GSA had also won 4x100m relay men’s race earlier in the competition. Kadam and Dalvi had led one-two finish in men’s 400m. Kadam who also won gold in 200m won the best individual athlete award in men’s championship.

“It was a great competition for me. We had worked hard and executed what our coach Harish Chandra Gupta had told us,” Kadam who broke the 35-year-old meet record in 400m told this paper on Monday.

“We train hard together and have good facilities to work with. I am now looking forward to better my timing and keep doing well in the top competitions,” the 20-year-old added.

Pearl D’Souza from the GSA won girl’s U-12 shot put by throwing it 94 metres while Isha Jadhav won gold in girls’ U-14 400m by clocking 61.8 seconds.  

On the concluding day, Deep Patil of Uran Gymkhana and Shreya Mulik of Shree Sidheshwar Sports Club, Satara emerged as the fastest boy and girl respectively. Both Deep and Shreya sprinted away with the gold medals winning the boys’ and girls’ U-18 100 metres events.

The Uran athlete ran a powerful race and produced a strong late burst in the final few metres. He managed to hold off a spirited challenge Mohit Gawade of Somaiya Sports Academy, Vidyavihar and won by a tight margin clocking 11.3 seconds. Mohit who gave it his best shot and tried his best was beaten at the tape finished fractionally behind Deep in 11.6secs to claim the silver, while Aryan Somale of J.S. Sports Club, Mira Road with a time of 11.7secs had to settle for the bronze.

The Satara youngster Shreya and Michelle Fernandes of Holy Cross, Kurla both got good starts and were involved in a close race. But, Shreya  with a sudden push in the last 10 metres did well to breast the tape first in 12.6 seconds for the gold, while Michelle who came in  12.8secs got the silver. Siya Dawoor of Sprinters Sports Club won the bronze in 13.3secs.
