Kareena Shankta breaks standing national mark
Kareena Shankta of Forest Club stole the show by setting the pool on fire as she not only broke the meet record in the 200m breast stroke but went on to better the long standing national mark on the concluding day of the GMAAA Age Group Aquatic championships, held at Tata Swimming pool, Chembur. Overall 17 new meet record were set during the three day competition.
Kareena, having broken India swimmer Monique Gandhi’s 2012 record in the 50m breast stroke, went to set another record by winning the 200m breaststroke event in 02:47.75 secs. on way to bettering last year’s Kenisha Gupta’s timing of 02:56.41 secs. Ever Kareena’s timing was better than the national timing of 02:50.42 secs. Vedika Amin from Otters Club, whom Kareena had beaten, redeemed herself by winning the 100m freestyle in 01:01.70 secs, thus eclipsing her Otters Club’s teammate Kenisha Gupta’s the rest last year’s timing of 01:02.37 secs.
Khar Gymkhana’s Neel Roy proved to be cut above the rest in the freestyle events. After winning the 200m and 50m free style events, he added another by clinching gold in the 100m event as well with yet another record-breaking effort.. Sharing the honours on the last day was Srish Maulik, of Otters Club, who topped the boys under-14 category by winning four golds – three of them being record-breaking efforts.
