Free content is always good
The gaming community will now be rewarded by quite a lot of free updates
As a gamer it’s always good when developers show commitment towards supporting a game with new content after launch. What’s even better is when they make a good amount of content available for free — after all, not everyone wants to spend $60 on a game followed by another $40-$60 for DLC, yes Star Wars Battlefront we’re looking at you.
Rewarding your community is the way to go and Blizzard has been doing it with Diablo 3 for a while now and it seems 343’s Halo 5 post launch content updates seem to be hitting the right notes too.
While the latest Xbox One exclusive was definitely the biggest launch of the year for Microsoft, the campaign felt rather underwhelming. But Halo 5’s near-perfect multiplayer mechanics pretty much saved the day. The game has still received criticism though — for not having enough maps and modes; and rightly so. Now, 343 has promised regular content updates for the game and have delivered so far.
In addition to the weekly playlists with new game modes and varied map pools they have just launched a significant content update titled, The Cartographer’s Gift, that brings in a whole host of additions to the game, including the much awaited Forge Mode. One of the best things about Halo has always been playing around in Forge mode, creating new maps and mini game modes that can be shared with the community. While some kinks definitely need to be worked out, the fact that it is here is big news for the Halo community.
And Forge mode isn’t the only addition as The Cartographer’s Gift also introduces four brand new maps — Battle of Noctus for Warzone, Overgrowth for Arena matches, Antifreeze and Entombed for Big Team Battle which was added as part of last month’s update. There is also new pack content including classic Halo weapons like the Rocket Launcher and new Armor sets and assassinations.
343 has promised new content EVERY month with at least six more free content updates in 2016 starting with January according to their online infographic on the official release.
Battlefield 4 is also going live with its DLCs. It adds two free classic maps that have been remade — Noshar Canals and Dragon Valley both of which received a significant facelifts on the Frostbite engine. There are even new additions to Dragon Valley which include infantry combat specific areas, destructible walls and a brand new vertical cloud layer for those looking to take the fight to the skies but also shields ground combat from complete aerial annihilation and the new feature of repairable bridges.
