In an ever increasing sea of true wireless earphones that have been launching in the country recently, brands have started to struggle to do things differently. In the crowd, we have the Flybot Active, a waterproof true wireless headset that delivers punchy sound along with being resistant to the elements.

Flybot Active

The Flybot Active can hold its own under water, so not only is it safe for a rainy day, but it can also survive a shower or a drop in the pool if you retrieve it quickly. The IPX7 rating means the device can stay underwater up to 1 meter for a maximum of 30 minutes. But can the Flybot back its ruggedness with good audio output? We reviewed the earphones to find out.

Design, Build

Like all the other true wireless options, the Flybot Active comes in a sleek looking case. The case lid is translucent and you can partially ‘look into’ the case and can see the buds charging without opening the lid. You can also see how much your case has charged through the lid. There are 4 LED lights like those you see on most power banks that give you a rough estimate of the juice left in the case.

The power button, the earbuds, and the and the LED charging indicator lie inside the case, while the standard USB charging port with a flap lies on the back with a lanyard hole on the left.

The earbuds themselves have a unique design, there are no hooks to keep the Flybot Active buds in your ears, but instead longer shafts, which go deeper in your ears but stay snug once fit in place. You have to get used to the size and fitting of the Flybot Active. People with smaller ears might feel a little pain after prolonged use, but once inserted in your ears, they surprisingly do not fall out, despite having no hooks.

The buds have a plastic body and we like the red and black color combination. There are buttons on each ends that are quite tactile but have to be pressed a little hard.

Battery

The battery life of the earphones is decent. The case takes about an hour and a half to charge from 0 to 100 per cent and the company claims you can charge the earbuds seven times on one charge of the case. The playback time is 4 to 6 hours on a stretch.

One problem we noticed a lot of times is that when you place the earbuds into the case to charge, even though they seemingly ‘snap’ into place, you must double-check if the red charging light blinks individually on each of the earbuds. The bigger design means sometimes the earbuds snap into place in the case, but the docking pins do not connect, resulting in either one of the buds not actually charging.

Performance

The Flybot Active may not be everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to the body and fit of the earphones, but the sound it produces is pretty amazing for the price. Volume outputs are loud and clear. The bass is not only punchy, but also clean. The highs are crisp. The audio may often sound like the treble takes prominence over the bass, but there is a good balance between both.

Flybot Active

The call-quality on the Flybot Active is decent and there were very few occasional moments where the other end couldn’t make out what we said due to low volume.

Verdict

The Flybot Active are a good pair of earphones but they take some getting used to, and aren’t for everyone. The design and the occasional charging issue of the earphones are the only letdowns of what otherwise is a good product for the price you pay.

The Flybot Active sells for around Rs 3,700, and for that amount, you get a decent deal on these true wireless earbuds.
