The success of the Wynk music app and the imminent success of the Wynk movie app has emboldened Airtel and has prompted their entry into one of the most lucrative areas in the Indian mobile market today and that is gaming.

With the launch of the Wynk gaming app, Airtel promises an ad and micro-transaction free ecosystem that will allow users to have the best possible mobile gaming experience in a subscription-based model. The Wynk gaming app, which can be downloaded from their website, has entered beta boasting with a library of 2,000 games — a decent enough catalogue at launch.

Airtel looks to further bolster their line-up of games on offer by partnering with big name mobile developers, having already got the likes of Square Enix, Sega and Nazara on board.

They aren’t only looking to get established publishers on their platform, but are also keen on working with and having indie developers. Developers get paid for their games on a “Time spent in game” basis and the pay they receive will be determined before publishing by Airtel and Playphone.

The service is free for all Airtel users and will be charged as per data plans. Non Airtel users will have to pay a monthly fee of '99 when the app goes live and '29 per month during the beta phase.

While the app is promising, there are hurdles Airtel has to cross. The biggest being quality check of available games and the second being piracy and protection against intellectual property theft.
