The gruelling summer is over and our much needed respite is facilitated by the monsoons. With monsoons however, arrives the tricky problem of safeguarding one’s smartphone against it.

Let’s face it: You can’t leave your smartphone at home just because it’s raining outside. Besides having to save oneself from getting drenched, it is essential that one protects their devices against prolonged exposure to moisture and any other watery mishaps. Given that there aren’t too many decent smartphones out there that work well after being dropped in water, it’s best to keep your smartphone dry. Here are a few ways that you can opt for, in order to protect your smartphone against this season:

Silica pouches: This is the simplest and the cheapest solution. Most silica pouches come with a zip-lock facility that allows users to protect the smartphone from getting wet and preventing excess moisture from accumulating. A simple zip pouch can end up taking your smartphone a long way in protecting it against water damage. The only downfall is that the smartphones cannot be used with these on, therefore; one is required to remove the device in order to use it. Think of it as a raincoat for your smartphone.

Water-proof cases: Keep your device’s full functionality intact with a waterproof case. These are specifically made to fit your device and protect them against factors water, dust, drops and bumps. Sadly enough, most waterproof cases manufacturers cater to only high-end flagship smartphones. Besides being expensive, there is also a high possibility that you might not find one for your device.

Shopping poly-bags: Out of ideas? Just switch your phone off, wrap it in a handkerchief, cover the same with a paper and properly fold it into a shopping poly-bag. You can even make use of a dustbin bag for that matter.

Balloon-cases: As random as this idea sounds, using a balloon to protect your smartphone from rain-water has actually found to be successful. Inflate the balloon in order to insert your smartphone inside then carefully deflate it (without popping it!) and it’s good to go. Then again, you might not be able to use the smartphone through the balloon.

Tempered glass: These are extremely durable. They are first heated and cooled using chemical and thermal technology especially to make them resistant against scratches, fingerprints and shock. Not many know this but they can also act as protectors for the smartphone’s display against water. Don’t go for a cheap glass protector, as the chances of water seeping in around the edges are higher then.

Condoms: You never know how lucky you’ll get and it’s certainly better to be safe than sorry, so use a condom…to protect your smartphone. These soft and stretchy thermoplastic covers end up protecting your smartphone against water.

If water still manages to seep into your phone, follow the given steps:

1. Switch your device off immediately.

2. Remove the SIM card, memory card and battery from the devices.

3. Wipe the smartphone carefully with a towel or tissue.

4. Put it in a bag full of uncooked rice.

5. Let it stay for 72 hours before switching it back on.
