Microsoft still working on a foldable smartphone; patents reveal

The Redmond giant's patent uncovers a lot of intricate details about how the Notebook works.

Rumours of Microsoft working on a foldable notepad-like device is already floating around and now a new patent has emerged this week with a lot more detail, revealing Microsoft’s under curtain foldable smartphone. The patent bears some images depicting a unique hinge and two separate screen device that appears to work in a number of configurations.

According to The Verge, the images of the device suggest that the mysterious device could flip over and be used as a nightstand. The Redmond giant's patent uncovers a lot of intricate details about how the hinge works. "Microsoft appears to be using gear-like cogs to create this adjustable hinge, allowing the device to hold in different positions," the company said. In terms of software, not much detail is provided for such a device.

One of the images shows that half of the screen might serve as a display while the other half might have a virtual keyboard and trackpad.

Earlier this year, a report from Windows Central stated that a (pocketable) ‘foldable’ tablet runs Windows 10 built with Windows Core OS, along with Cshell. The name of the prototype device is dubbed as ‘Andromeda.’ The main selling point of this device will be centred on pen input and ink.

Additionally, the foldable tablet could come with telephony capabilities. This new ‘foldable’ tablet could be Surface-branded, something like Surface Note or Surface Journal. The notebook app-powered by OneNote will also mimic writing on a real notebook. Since it runs Windows 10, it is likely to come with a start screen as well as the ability to run apps such as Microsoft Edge or Photos.

As of now, it is not clear if such a device will saw the light of the day.
