Hitachi's camera tech captures video images without using lens
Japanese company Hitachi on Tuesday announced their latest camera technology that doesn’t make use of lens while capturing video images. This allows the camera to weigh less and be thinner in comparison to others in the market.
The new technology also allows the camera to be mounted freely on devices like smartphones and robots at arbitary positions without imposing design restraints. Additionally, the technology also focuses better after capturing an image through the simple use of a film imprinted with the concentric-circle pattern that replaces the lenses.
This technology acquires depth information in addition to planar information which essentially makes it possible for the camera to reproduce an image at an arbitrary point of focus even after the image has been captured.
The company is aiming towards utilising this technology in a broad range of applications such as work support, automated driving and human behaviour analysis through smartphones, vehicles and robots.
