CEO Pete Lau announces OnePlus TV's launch in September

The SmartTV will launch in India and then spread to other markets.

OnePlus’s CEO Pete Lau has announced that the brand’s new smartTV is slated to launch in India sometime this September. Named the ‘OnePlus TV’, the model is first supposed to release in India. Meanwhile the North American, Chinese and European launches are being worked towards, he said.

Justifying the decision in his blog post, from where he announced the launch, Pete wrote, “We all know, “content is king,” which remains one of the major reasons for television's continued relevance in our lives. Yet, the content ecosystem is quite different from one country to another. We have always had a very positive relationship with content providers in India, who have always been willing to partner with us, which guarantees great content for our users. We are also working hard to launch OnePlus TV in North America, Europe and China regions as soon as we establish partnerships with most of local and regional content providers.”

The company has earlier confirmed that its TV was in the works since at least the past two years. Months after the initial revelation the news portal MySmartPrice, had reported that it had found a OnePlus TV listing on Bluetooth SIG. The hinted that it would use LED display technology and range between 45 and 75-inch screen sizes. It also revealed that the device would use Bluetooth 5. In an interview with Business Insider last year Lau had himself revealed that the smartTV would feature a camera, as well as deep integrations with the company's phones.

In his blog post he hinted towards other significant features of the product, saying “I am confident that there are many things that you can expect from the OnePlus TV. Image and sound quality are fundamental features that we must get right. Alongside these key essentials, I believe the TV’s remarkable design and smart interconnectivity make this product even more exciting.”

The TV can be expected to be launched in the Premium SmartTV category with prices higher than its chinese counterpart Xiaomi, who leads the market however still affordable. More details are expected to be revealed soon.
