Xiaomi beats Samsung, Apple as India's next preferred upgrade

Xiaomi is the most preferred smartphone brand for Indian Android owners looking to upgrade their devices in 2017.

Xiaomi has emerged as one of the most popular brands in India, outranking rival Samsung in the country. A new report by Strategy Analytics said that one-third of India’s Android users intend to replace their smartphones in the next six months and network speed and hardware performance is outranking camera and display size among the potential buyers.

The report comes after a survey on around 2,000 users, of which around 26 per cent chose to opt for their next preferred brand as Xiaomi. This survey placed Xiaomi ahead of both Apple and Samsung, which gained only 12 per cent preference from the surveyed users. Other brands such as Motorola and Lenovo received around 11 per cent votes and Micromax gained around 9 per cent votes.

Strategy Analytics said that the increased focus was on network speed and processor performance by the users. This could spell as good news for the India’s telecom operators as LTE usage in the country is constantly increasing.

Rajeev Nair, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, stating that Xiaomi was ranked as one of the top three vendors in the Indian market in Q4 2016. “The vendor grew a whopping 125 per cent year-on-year and 17 per cent quarter-on-quarter, capturing 10 per cent of market share in India in the quarter,” he said.

Strategy Analytics also mentions that with Nokia planning to re-enter the market this month, popular brands including Micromax, Sony, LG, Lenovo and Motorola would have a cause of concern.
