The smartphone ecosystem in India operates pretty much like the Indian Premier League. There are big ticket teams that have premium players that offer powerhouse performances. Then there are the entry-level, not-so-flashy teams that create a hero or two, at regular intervals. The really cool ones are the middle tier ones that have the muscle and performance to challenge the big names, but they wait for the right time. Tecno Camon i4 is the Royal Challengers of smartphones. Every season, it takes a few games to warm up and cruise. This year, the company has hit a jackpot!

Camon i4, with its triple camera, dot notch screen and 'rocket' charging, is the device that is challenging the biggies. The device comes with a 13 MP + 2 MP + 8 MP camera, with an in-built 'night algorithm' for better low-light shots. The 13 MP primary lens is supported by an 8 MP wide angle lens and a 2 MP depth sensor. With features like AR mode for face stickers and AI-enabled scene detection, the Camon i4 features a 16 MP selfie camera with AI Beauty mode. This time around, Tecno features a 6-level beautification mode and scans 228 facial points. The beauty mode does interesting things like extending your eyeliner, improve eye pupil shine, and brighten skin tone. Most of these features are usually found only in more expensive flagship devices.

Powered by a 3500 mAh battery, the Camon i4 comes with rocket charge that promises 2 hours of calling time from 10 minutes of charging. The 2GB + 32GB is for Rs 9599, 3GB + 32GB priced at Rs 10,599 and the 4GB + 64GB is for Rs 11,999. We were impressed with the minimalistic design and good hand feel, in spite of having three camera lenses at the back. The dot notch is non-intrusive but adds to the design element. With impressive features like a quad flash and AI driven night photography, the Tecno Camon i4 is a good bargain for what it offers.
