iPhone 8 tops the global sales charts for May 2018

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus last year alongside the iPhone X, the critics considered that the former would hardly gather attention as consumers would be interested to move to the latter — thanks to a host of revolutionary features on the iPhone X. The iPhone 8 has since then managed to keep hold of the iPhone X and the market-leading rivals in terms of sales but never managed to top the sales chart. However, the latest market research suggests otherwise.

Counterpoint’s latest global smartphone sales figures have put the iPhone 8 as the top-selling smartphone in the world, grabbing a market share of 2.4 per cent. In fact, it sits alongside the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, thus dominating the board. The flagship iPhone X comes in close at third position with a market share of 2.3 per cent, therefore making the three best smartphones in the world sitting on the podium. The figures depict the sales for the month of May.

Surprisingly, Xiaomi’s cheapest smartphone — the Redmi 5A, has to manage to finish fourth on the charts with a market share of 2.2 per cent, beating the iPhone 8 Plus’ 2.1 per cent and the Galaxy S9’s 2.1 per cent. The last four positions have been occupied by the Chinese manufacturers, out of which Vivo’s X21 — the world’s first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor, has acquired 1.4 per cent market share.

The iPhone 8 was introduced as the entry-model to Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup. Built around Apple’s A11 Bionic chip, it runs on the latest iOS 11.4 and is scheduled to receive the iOS 12 update soon. The major difference between the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 is lack of a fullscreen display and the presence of the FaceID system. Apple also launched the (PRODUCT) RED versions of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus last month for a financial contribution to the noble cause of efforts to fend off AIDS.
