Samsung's upcoming flagship flip smartphone breaks cover

The SM-W2018 flip smartphone will come with two displays and will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 SoC.

Samsung is known for making some of the most beautiful smartphones from the past few years. While its Galaxy S8 and Note 8 may take the trophy of being one of the most desirable smartphones, the company is constantly working on new niche products that mark it aside from other competitors in the smartphone segment. Samsung has been making flip phones in the recent times and it seems that the company will introduce a flagship one of the same.

Some leaked pictures on a Twitter user's timeline have shown a mysterious flip smartphone by the name of SM-W2018. Despite sporting a clamshell form factor, it looks every inch a smartphone. That’s because it has two displays — one on the top and one under the lid, facing the keypad. Both the displays are reportedly 4.2-inch full HD touchscreen panels. The keypad consists of brushed aluminium buttons with alphanumeric inscriptions, suggesting a T9 keyboard. There’s even an old-school navigation button.

Both the displays seem to be AMOLED units. The rear panel is made of glass, judging by the smudges. It, in fact, resembles the Galaxy S8’s rear panel with the oddly placed fingerprint scanner (Why Samsung? You could have placed it on the keypad!). The smartphone is running an unknown version of Android.

While India doesn’t see flip phones anymore, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the company to bring niche devices like these to the Indian shores. There are people who still like the idea of a conventional flip phone with decent specifications.
