Android 9 Pie comes to Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, unofficially

A stock AOSP build of Android 9 Pie has made its way to XDA forums, with all the features intact.

Google has recently released Android 9 Pie for its Pixel range of devices, bringing a lot of new features and a smarter Android experience. Additionally, the AOSP ROM has also been released for developers and other manufacturers to bring the latest version of the OS to other Android smartphones from manufacturers around the world. While Essential is the only other manufacturer, apart from Google, to release the Pie update for its device, other manufacturers are still in line for rolling it out to eligible devices. Xiaomi hasn’t rolled out the Pie update for its smartphones yet, but surprisingly, their Redmi Note 4 has got the Pie update.

Yes, the Redmi Note 4 from 2017 has been seeded with a build of Android 9 Pie. However, there’s a catch — it’s not an official build with MIUI on top. The Note 4’s Pie update is, in fact, an AOSP-based ROM, bringing the stock Android interface. Abhishek987 from XDA Forums has worked on the stock AOSP ROM of Android Pei and made it compatible with the Redmi Note 4.

The results of this unofficial port are surprisingly positive. As of now, the Note 4 with the AOSP ROM of Pie hasn’t exhibited major bugs and errors. The OS has been working fine, with all the features working as intended. However, the developer still claims that there may be bugs that haven’t been discovered yet, so one has to exercise caution before relying on it as the daily driver.

If you have the knowledge of flashing custom ROMs on a Xiaomi device, you can go ahead and enjoy the Pie update on your Redmi Note 4. However, do note that this will remove MIUI from your device and replace it with a completely barebones version of Android.

The Redmi Note 4 was launched back in 2017, with Android Marshmallow 6.0. The device was later updated to Android 7.0 Nougat. Xiaomi hasn’t hinted at whether the Note 4 will get upgraded to Android Oreo and eventually Android 9 Pie in the future, with chances of both coming to device looking negative.
