Honor aims to introduce world's first 5G smartphone
With 4G becoming a standard feature across most smartphones, the world is now awaiting the introduction of smartphones with 5G capabilities. As per a report by GSMArena, most smartphone manufacturers aim to deliver their first 5G smartphones by 2019. Countries like China and the USA are seeking to unveil their 5G networks that will elevate the use of AI and IoT.
During a the INS conference in Hong Kong, Honor’s president George Zhao has stated that the Huawei-owned brand will be ready to deliver its first 5G ready smartphone by next year. Zhao is a person who comes from a telecommunication carrier background and has seen the transition from 3G to 4G and believes that there are three levels of contribution needed.
He states that patent initiators like Huawei are the first one, the second being brands like Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm, etc. that have been promoting this network’s development. And lastly, smartphone brands that are based on 5G solutions and the development of 5G applications.
The Kirin 980 SoC that will be powering Honor smartphones will be 5G ready and sport the Balong modem. The report states that the Honor Magic 2 will be the first handset out of the gate with a 5G modem and its due for the end of this year which is a bit strange as Honor claims that 2019 will see the introduction of 5G smartphones.
