Google to take AR platform Tango' out of its misery

Google and other giants such as Apple have figured a way to bring AR features to the phones with just the hardware that's already onboard.

Google has announced that it will be shutting its Augmented Reality (AR) platform ‘Tango,’ which was announced on March 1 2018. The move is seen as a bid to push the new ‘AR Core’ that will bring AR experience to the Android users.

The Tango team took to Twitter to make the announcement. The tweet read ‘We’re turning down support for Tango on March 1, 2018. Thank you to our incredible community of developers who made such progress with Tango over the last three years. We look forward to continuing the journey with you on ARCore.’

‘Google is continuing AR development with ARCore, a new platform designed for building augmented reality apps for a broad range of devices without the requirement for specialised hardware,’ Google said.

‘Project Tango’ was launched in 2014, it uses digital vision enabling to detect their location without bringing in GPS or any other signals into act.

But now Google and other giants such as Apple have figured a way to bring AR features to the smartphones with just the hardware that’s already onboard.

Google brought its ARCore to the Pixel and Pixel 2 in form of some AR stickers — immediately opening AR features to more people compared to what Tango will likely reach in its lifespan.
