OnePlus to launch smart TV in 2019
Up until now, OnePlus has been fairly known for its affordable yet high-performance smartphones. They unveiled the OnePlus 6 earlier this year that has proven itself to one of the fastest Android phones in the market. The next device in line in the OnePlus 6T scheduled for a launch within a month. However, OnePlus has something else to please its fans — a smart TV.
In one of their recent blog posts, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has announced that the company is working on a new smart TV that will bring the next generation of connected devices to homes. The smart TV will utilise OnePlus’ prowess in image and audio, and will adhere to high standards set by OnePlus for its smartphones. Since Pete mentioned 5G connectivity and smarter AI integration, there could be a chance that the smart TV will offer faster connections and will work effortlessly with OnePlus phones, similar to the integration between Apple’s iOS ecosystem. Presently, the team is calling the product OnePlus TV.
In another interview to Business Insider, Pete said that the TV will be launched in 2019. However, the first generation won’t be perfect and therefore, will improve over the time via software updates. “It won’t be something that’s perfect and absolutely complete and revolutionary from the start. The TV will receive updates to make it smarter over the next five years, becoming more connected to your smartphone along the way,” said Lau.
It is evident that OnePlus wants to make its presence felt in the smart TV industry after rival Xiaomi forayed into the segment with its range of Mi TVs a few years ago. The smart TV segment offers a lot of opportunities for manufacturers to create new ecosystems of their own and OnePlus is looking to bank high on the trend for its community.
