Huawei Mate 20 series finally goes official, comes packing Leica triple cameras

The handsets are powered by a Kirin 980 SoC and are the first Android phones to come with a 7nm design.

After literally months of rumours and a plethora of leaks, Huawei has finally introduced to the world the Mate 20 series of smartphones and based on the specs they feature, it is clear that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has not held back. The Huawei P20 Pro that was announced earlier this year was a great phone, and for this year at least, the brand had already had their marquee handset with reviewers across the world raving about it. Now, with the latest handsets, Huawei has cast a huge shadow over virtually every Android handset available in the market as these smartphones boast some incredible specs.

At the event held in London, Huawei announced not one but four new handsets — Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20, Mate 20 X and the Porsche Design Mate 20 RS.

Mate 20 Pro

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

The Mate 20 Pro is the top-of-the-line model that was announced and it goes head-to-head with the likes of the iPhone XS and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 flagship devices. The handset features a curved 6.39-inch OLED 2K+ display that sports a resolution of 3120 x 1440 pixels and comes with an aspect ratio of 19:5:9. On the back is where it gets interesting as the handset boasts a Leica-branded triple camera system in a square format unlike the one found on the P20 Pro. This can be considered a great design choice as it makes the whole unit look compact and not parts of a whole. The cameras found here are rated at 40MP with a wide-angle of 27mm and an aperture value of F/1.8, a 20MP ultra wide-angle 16mm sensor with an aperture of F/2.2 and an 8MP 3x telephoto 80mm sensor that features OIS and a F/2.4 aperture. For selfies, the Mate 20 Pro uses a 24MP F2.0 sensor.

The handset also comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner which is not found on the other Mate 20 series smartphones. The Mate 20 Pro is powered by a Kirin 980 processor that’s paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage. A 4200mAh battery keeps this handset juiced up and it comes with a 40WHuawei SuperCharge charger. An interesting feature of this handset is that it has a wireless charging pad that’s fitted in the handset; this allows you to charge any other device that supports wireless charging. The Mate 20 Pro also features an infrared 3D facial recognition system to unlock the phone which is similar to the technology that Apple uses with the iPhone X. The handset is IP68 certified making it water and dust resistant. The Mate 20 Pro comes with a new nanoSD card storage which is a new format from Huawei. The handset runs on EMUI 9 that’s based on Android 9.0 Pie.

Lastly, the handset will come available in a variety of colours and will go on sale in select markets across Europe starting from October 16 for EUR 1049 (about Rs 89,000)

Huawei Mate 20

The Mate 20 is not as feature packed as the Mate 20 Pro but boasts some excellent hardware nonetheless. The Mate 20 features a 6.5-inch LCD display with a resolution of 2244 x 1080 pixels and has an 18:7:9 aspect ratio. The major difference between the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro is the waterdrop notch found on the marginally lower-end model. This handset too gets the triple-camera system, however, it features a 16MP ultra wide-angle 17mm sensor with a F/2.2 aperture, a 12MP wide-angle 27mm sensor with F/1.8 aperture and an 8MP 2X telephoto 52mm sensor with OIS and F2.4 aperture. The handset uses the same front-facing camera as found on the Mate 20 Pro which is a 24MP fixed-focus sensor with a F/2.0 aperture. This handset also comes loaded with EMUI 9 which is based on Android 9.0 Pie.

The handset comes with a fingerprint sensor on the rear unlike the in-display fingerprint sensor found on the Mate 20 Pro. The handset is powered by a Kirin 980 processor and is paired with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. The handset comes with a 4000mAh battery and is sold with a 22.5W Huawei SuperCharge charger.

Lastly, the 4GB version will come will be priced at EUR 799 (about Rs 68,000) while the 6GB variant will cost EUR 849 (about Rs 72,134). This handset will go on sale immediately as well in select European markets.

Mate 20 X

Huawei Mate 20 X

The Mate 20 X comes with a larger display with it measuring 7.2-inches. The screen found here is of the FHD+OLED variety and has an 18:7:9 aspect ratio. The battery found here is rated at 5000mAh and the handset comes with Huawei’s M Pen. It comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and will cost EUR 899 (about Rs 76,400) when it goes on sale on October 26. The rest of the features are identical to the Mate 20.

Porsche design

Huawei Porsche Design Mate 20 RS

This is a premium version of the Mate 20 Pro and has similar features with the only difference being a unique Black colour, a Porsche logo and some enhanced specifications. This version is priced at EUR 1,695 going all the way up to EUR 2095 (about Rs 1,44,052 to Rs 1,77,985).
