Apple's dependence on Samsung continues

After display's, Samsung is rumoured to supply Apple with 5G models for 2020 iPhones.

Apple is one of Samsung’s biggest clients and their dependence on the South Korean bran has stretched on for years. It now appears that the union is going to be even stronger as a new report claims that apart from Qualcomm, Samsung will be the second supplier of 5G modems for Apple’s future iPhones.

As per a report by GSMArena, ever since the news broke about Intel pulling out of the 5G model business, Apple had no choice but to settle with Qualcomm and use their chips for upcoming iPhones. In a turn of events, a report by noted analyst Ming-Chi Quo states that the Cupertino-based smartphone manufacturer is looking for a second partner to supply 5G modems to them and it is strongly believed that Samsung will be the brand to fill this void. The report goes on to add that it will provide Apple with some leverage when negotiating prices and in the process lower its dependence on a single supplier. If all this does bear fruit, then we could potentially see Samsung and Qualcomm supplying Apple with 5G chips for the 2020 iPhone line-up.

This also proves another point. The 2019 iPhones will in all likelihood not feature 5G but Kuo goes on to add that 5G could boost Apple’s iPhone sales to a significant degree.
