Apple rolls out iOS 11.3.1 update for fixing iPhone 8 display

The update restores touch input for all iPhone 8 units depending third-party display panels.

A few weeks ago, reports of several iPhone 8 units coming up with unresponsive displays crept up. Following a brief investigation, it was found that only those units of the iPhone 8 were affected that underwent a third-party display repair. Apple promised to release a fix for the issue, which is rolling out for all iPhone 8 users across the world with the iOS 11.3.1 update.

The iOS 11.3.1 update primarily fixes the issue of the iPhone 8’s display becoming unresponsive in cases where the handset’s display was repaired by a third-party service centre. The update weighs around 47MB if downloaded as an Over-The-Air update. However, users can also use iTunes to perform a clean install of the latest update. The iOS 11.3.1 update is available for download on all iPhones, iPads and iPods running iOS 11.

As discovered by Motherboard, several Phone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus users complained about the display becoming unresponsive after installing the iOS 11.3 update. The issue was limited to those units of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus that had undergone repairs through third-party services. Later, it was found that the display drivers for third-party iPhone 8 display panels weren’t supported by iOS 11.3, which caused the problem.

Apple has always been suggesting its customers to get their devices repaired at an authorised Apples service centre. While third-party repairs may cost less, it results in an unpleasant user experience, which iPhone 8 users had to face.
