MWC 2018: Huawei's new laptop has a pop-up web camera

The unique camera pop-up mechanism ensures security to the users who are concerned about privacy issues about the camera when not in use.

At MWC 2018, Huawei has unveiled its new MateBook X Pro laptop. The company says this laptop features a 91 per cent screen-to-body ratio with almost no bezels.

The X Pro laptop has a quad-speaker Dolby Atmos audio system and also features a new concept of the web cam, which seems to be tucked away in the keyboard itself. Since it doesn’t have space to feature a traditional camera at the top of the screen, the company chose to hide this web camera in the keyboard’s function keys. With a pop-up functioning mechanism, this camera is placed between the F6 and F7 keys. This unique camera functioning mechanism ensures security to the users who are concerned about their privacy issues about the camera when not in use.

Previously, companies like Dell, who also make thin-bezel displays for its XPS laptop line-up, chose to move the traditional camera at the bottom of the display. However, this placement is not as secured as MateBook Pro’s solution of tucking away in the keyboard. Even though, this setup is unique, it cannot be a replacement to standard traditional camera placement at the top of the screen, since the standard view isn’t possible with these different setups.
