Neyyappam loses out to Nougat

India’s Neyyappam dreams were shattered as Android named its version 7.0 as Nougat, a chewy sweet

All those harboured hopes have come crashing down with just one tweet. Android has named its version 7.0, the N with Nougat. It took just a Twitter post for Android to announce the name together with posting a YouTube video link showing the Nougat statue unwrapping. Though the public poll was wound up by May, speculations started spilling out towards mid June about the possible disappointment hovering around Neyyappam.

Though Nutella was blamed to be the rival, breaking all assumptions, Nougat has finally won the race in first place. Rumour mills even went to the extent of saying the parent company producing Nutella would nail a deal with Android for a cost to get the popular smart phone operating system be christened with the name of their product.

However in the video, Android is clever to show they have not ignored the efforts that went behind across the globe to get the version named. There in the list of N-snacks, Neyyappam is also acknowledged. Of course, we expected a lot when an Indian Sundar Pichai is seated as Google CEO. He himself ignited the flames of hope of getting an Indian snack to be named as the next Android while addressing a gathering in 2015.

Neyyappam had other Indian counterparts too, the topper being Naankhatai. Once the voting gathered momentum, the Kerala Tourism Department itself promoted the idea of naming the Android next with Neyyappam through Twitter. This aside, campaigns were in full swing down south to vote for Neyyappam.

The chewy confection Nougat is made using a variety of ingredients such as sugar, honey, roasted nuts, whipped egg whites and occasionally candied fruit is added. The origin of this sweet is still ambiguous, but there are versions speaking of an Arabic origin in 10th century. The snacky side apart, the tech world can expect some better features in the productivity, performance and security fronts when Nougat comes into action.

Among the promises is a split-screen multi-window mode that enables viewing two apps simultaneously on a screen in halves. The notification side has smaller icons on offer. A better power-saving facility is expected to give an improved performance than Marshmallow. There is much to cheer on data connectivity. A data saver mode will curb the data usage with special design to bring down bandwidth usage.

Wait till Nougat, the Android 7.0, gets a launch probably in August or September.
