Quite an enjoyable concept
Battleborn beta might have a few issues but the game does not fail to impress.
This past weekend I spent most, if not all of my time, playing the Battleborn beta. Even though there are kinks that need to be worked out it’s a ton of fun!
Battleborn is like a first person MOBA going up against the likes of Paragon and Overwatch. The game changes drastically depending on the Battleborn you choose for each game as the melee and ranged mechanics are completely different. Most ranged champions have a clear advantage however with the right items a melee champion can cause havoc in a battle, though the hit feedback and ‘feel’ of the melee combat isn’t as great as playing any of the ranged champions.
There were two modes in the Beta; Versus and story mode. Battleborn comes with a proper story mode that can be played using any character solo or cooperatively online. As you can imagine most of your time will be spent online in one of three versus modes; the first a standard Moba like mode where you must destroy two enemy sentries to win; the second where you must ‘sacrifice’ minions in an enemy building for points and the third a zone capture game mode that was unavailable in the beta. Game modes and Gameplay asides, Battleborn’s item system operates similar to Paragon in the sense that you head into the match with premade loadouts. You unlock items by opening packs however you can only buy them with in game credits, however you can only equip three items so you need to figure out exactly which items suit your character.
Overall the Battleborn concept is great and quite enjoyable however the PC version feels a lot better as opposed to the console version of the game. Hopefully the minor matchmaking bugs and balances are fixed before launch which will make it a much better experience.
