Islamabad: Pakistan’s Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has decided on broader consultation on the issue of triple divorce as difference of opinion widened. Scholars’ opinion and seminars will be conducted on the issue, the body said.
CII sought proposals for appropriate punishment on triple divorce as it could not arrive on a conclusion regarding punishment for offence of instant triple talaq. The CII decided to consult clerics belonging to all schools of thought.
Letters will be penned seeking recommendations for punishment for the offence. The CII will take suggestions from Ittehad-i-Tanzeemat-e-Madaris Pakistan (ITMP) and will conduct seminars for a broader consensus.
According to CII complete consensus on instant triple divorce will impel the punishment for the offence.
Earlier, the council recommended six-month imprisonment or Rs100,000 fine or both as punishments for instant triple divorce.
Speaking on the matter, chairman of CII, Qibla Ayaz, said that divorcee women face a lot of issues especially homelessness.
The government has said that the Council of Islamic Ideology will also determine the punishment, he added. Pakistan abolished triple talaq when it issued its Muslim Family Law Ordinance in 1961.
