Pakistan releases 140 Indian fishermen
Islamabad: At least 140 Indian fishermen were released from Malir Jail on Thursday by Pakistani authorities.
The fishermen reached Cantonment Station amidst tight security and boarded the Allama Iqbal Express train to Lahore. From there, they will travel to India via Wagah Border.
Speaking to media, human rights activist Faisal Edhi said the fishermen were released from jail and being sent to Lahore and 145 more detained fishermen will be released in the coming days.
“These Indian fishermen are poor labourers. There was no ill treatment towards them. The Indian government is also requested to release Pakistanis detained in India,” he said. The Edhi Foundation also provided the fishermen with gifts and '5,000 each. Every year dozens of Indian and Pakistani fishermen are arrested in the Arabian Sea after straying across marine borders.
They often suffer in prisons even after serving their sentences.
