Mumbai: In an attempt to provide immediate relief to Mumbaikars during calamities, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has earmarked 120 municipal schools as emergency shelters in the city during monsoon.

According to civic officials, the civic body every year selects municipal schools as temporary shelters for people in case of emergency during monsoon. However, it will be the first time their details will be made public so that people are aware of where to take shelter during emergency.

“These schools, on their front side, will have boards mentioning that they have been earmarked as emergency shelters during disaster like situation. The boards will have names and numbers of concerned school authorities so that people can contact them immediately during disasters,” said a senior civic official.

These boards will also have carry details like dos and don’ts during an emergency situation, contact numbers of disaster management officials, civic officials, the police and fire brigade and the address of other shelters.

Bhandup resident Kiran Salaskar, who lives on one of the hilly areas, said that the BMC should also provide basic amenities at these emergency shelters. In an attempt to provide immediate relief to Mumbaikars during calamities, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has earmarked 120 municipal schools as emergency shelters in the city during monsoon.
