Mumbai: The state Cabinet on Thursday decided to waive the stamp duty and registration fees for the leave and licence agreement for the construction of the memorial to the late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray in Mumbai.

The state government has given the mayor’s bungalow at Shivaji Park on lease for 30 years for the memorial.

At the meeting held on Thursday, the state Cabinet approved a proposal to waive the stamp duty and registration fees for leave and licence agreement for the project.

The government and the local civic body have leased an area measuring 11,551 sq metres for one rupee per annum for the construction of the Thackeray memorial. The Bal Thackeray Memorial Trust headed by Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was constituted and a plot of land in Dadar, which currently hosts the mayor’s bungalow, belonging to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was given to the trust on lease for construction of a memorial.

A high-level committee was set up in 2014 for setting up of the memorial. It held various meetings and explored the possibility of setting up such a memorial at various places, including the premises in contention — the mayor’s bungalow. The said property belongs to the BMC, and the government accepted this proposal.

Last month, in resposnse to reports that plans were afoot to construct memorial of the Sena founder at the site of the existing sea-facing mayor’s bungalow and that the BMC was reportedly planning to build a new mayor’s bungalow on a neighbouring plot where a civic gymkhana (sports club) stands, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray said that his party will not allow the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) to raze the civic gymkhana at Shivaji Park to make way for a new Mayor’s bungalow.

The MNS chief, who had met civic chief Ajoy Mehta, had reiterated his opposition to the plan to build a memorial of late Shiv Sena chief and his uncle at the site of the existing mayor’s bungalow, saying it would set a wrong precedent.
