Google is shutting down its link shortening tool

Back in 2009, Google has launched the Google shorten URL (goo.gl) – a service that shortens lengthy URLs and makes them compact, which allows users to easily share links and measure traffic online. Many popular such services have been emerged since then. However, the company is planning to ditch this service and replacing it with new Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL) tool.

Google says ‘FDLs are smart URLs that allow you to send existing and potential users to any location within an iOS, Android or web app.” 

New and anonymous users cannot use goo.gl console to shorten their links starting from April 13th, while old users get an extension for a year.

As for the new users, the company recommends trying the new FDLs service to create their shorter links. “After March 30, 2019, all links will continue to redirect to the intended destination,” says Google on its blog post.

Google claims that goo.gl has been a great tool they have built. Furthermore, the company says they are excited about the possibilities with these Firebase Dynamic Links, particularly when it comes to dynamic platforms’ detection like iOS, Android and web app.
