MUMBAI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said the state was considering a law against ‘love jihad.’ “We have not taken any decision yet, but we will study the laws made by different states in this regard,” he said on Friday.

His statement came after a meeting with the father of Shraddha Walkar, who was killed by her boyfriend Aaftab Amin Poonawala and hacked into pieces in Delhi.

“We are looking at what are the laws regarding this in other states. Based on that we will decide further,” Fadnavis, who heads the state’s home department, said.

Vikas Walkar, the father of Shraddha Walkar, slammed the police for inaction after meeting Fadnavis.

If the Vasai and Nala Sopara police (in Palghar district) had taken timely action in the matter, his daughter could have been saved from the macabre death, he said.

“If the local police had conducted the investigation then properly, my daughter would have been alive,” said Walkar. He reiterated his demand for the capital punishment for Poonawala, currently in custody at the Tihar Jail in New Delhi.

Walkar also demanded an enquiry into the role of the police officials who allegedly did not take prompt action on Shraddha’s complaint of November 23, 2020, when she had expressed apprehensions for her life after Poonawala had threatened to kill and cut her into pieces.
