New Delhi: In a suspected case of gang war, a 40-year-old man was gunned down by group of assailants in Narela area of Outer North district on Sunday morning.

The attackers pumped more than 20 bullets into Virender Mann alias Kale, a resident of Narela, in full public view where they surrounded his car and opened indiscriminate fire. “More than 40 rounds fired on the car aiming a man in the car. We ran for our life. It all happened around 200 meters away from Narela police station,” said an eyewitness, who wished not to be named.

Police said the deceased was also involved in 13 heinous crimes including murder and robberies registered against him at various police stations. “The car driver, however, managed to escape unhurt but Virender, who was sitting on next seat died on the spot. The murder could be a fallout of old rivalry or personal enmity. We have formed several teams to identify the attackers,” said a senior police officer.

The incident happened at 10.45 am on Lampur Road in Narela Industrial Area when Virender was going to visit one of his relatives in his car with driver. “The car in which Virender was travelling was intercepted by four people travelling in another car. When his car got stuck in slow traffic, the assailants from another car got down and opened indiscriminate fire on his car,” said a policeman.

Police said they are verifying the driver’s role as he is the only survivor in the attack. “A PCR van reached the spot after getting a call. The injured was shifted to Raja Harish Chander Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds,” said a police officer.

A doctor on duty at the hospital claimed that around 20-25 bullet entry wounds are on the body of the deceased. The exact numbers will be confirmed only after post-mortem.

Names of criminal gangs of Sandeep Mental and Jitender Gogi surfaced in link with the killing, but police said they have not received any such information as yet. Virender was associated with a political party and had fought at municipal elections.
