Android P Beta is available for non-Google devices

At this year’s Google I/O 2018, one of the biggest an most anticipated announcements would have to be the Android P. Available to developers in the form of a Developer Preview versions, Android P has been finally rolled out in a Beta version. Android P Beta will allow users registered with their Beta program to test out the latest version of Android in a form that could finally make it to the market later this year. However, unlike previous versions of Android, Android P Beta won’t be a Google Pixel-exclusive OS.

In an unprecedented move, Google has announced the availability of Android P for several non-Google branded smartphones. The Android P Beta will be made available to following smartphones initially:

• Sony Xperia XZ2
• Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S
• Nokia 7 Plus
• Oppo R15 Pro
• Vivo X21
• OnePlus 6
• Essential PH‑1
• Google Pixel/ Pixel 2

It’s a positive sign to see several other manufacturers trying their best to provide their customers with a taste of latest version of Android, even if they offer a custom Android interface. Barring Nokia and Google, all the other manufacturers in the list offer a modified version of Android on their offerings. Google states that this has been made possible due to several of its partners adopting Project Treble — a program introduced by Google last year that allowed manufacturers using a customised version of Android to separate their modifications from the core Android system, resulting in faster Android update roll out across devices.
